Join us for Take Back the Night 2023!
This year, Take Back the Night will start at 6:00 pm at the War Memorial at 85 Water street. Following this, we will walk/march to the courthouse steps. Guest speakers will present on the courthouse steps. For transportation, to/from the event, there will be two buses offering shuttle services completely free to event goers. The buses will offer pickup and drop off services at both The Village Mall and Memorial University.
Prior to Covid-19, we did a march every year from Bannerman Park to the courthouse. This was very empowering for survivors, advocates, and the community as a whole. Because the march covered such a distance, there was a need to have police involved to close the streets for the safety of participants. Many folks were not happy with having police in attendance for obvious reasons.
2021 and 2022 events saw us pivoting based on pandemic restrictions and feedback from community to outdoor events, hosted in safe spaces where there was no need for police presence. While there were a lot of folks who felt very strongly about their feelings of police, there was/is an equal amount of folks who longed for the coming together of community and the significance that the march to the courthouse has. Because of this, we have decided to meet the community somewhere in the middle and have a walk/march that does not require streets to be closed, nor have police present.
We are so excited to see everyone this year! For any questions, please email Dawn at email@example.com
